Vineyard: La Rendeja
Origin of the grapes: Selected from the vineyards of the municipality of Pesquera de Duero, facing south and at an altitude of more than 800 meters.
Soils: Limestone with its characteristic white color. Limestone soils are not very fertile, but the presence of clay and silt allows them to retain humidity. These two complementary characteristics make it possible to obtain optimal maturity of the grapes with moderate yields, conducive to the production of high quality grapes.
Climate: 2018 started with a typically cold winter in Ribera del Duero, during which temperatures dropped to 12°C below zero. This cold weather continued until early spring, and yet, despite the conditions, budburst of the vines took place on the usual dates, at the end of April. After a very dry 2017, a wet period occurred at the end of winter, then it rained continuously throughout the spring, making 2018 an officially very wet year in our region. The growth of the vine vegetation was favored by the mild temperatures and the water reserves in the soil, which made it possible to obtain significantly larger berries. As a result of this increase in the size of the berries, and despite higher than usual temperatures in September and October, the ripening process slowed down. The harvest lasted until the end of October and produced an exceptional harvest both in terms of quantity and quality. The absence of precipitation in the latter part of the growing season allowed healthy grapes to be harvested. The 2018 harvest is actually the second largest on record, surpassed only by 2016.
Vinification: Janus is a direct encounter with the essence of Ribera del Duero. It is a powerful, fruity, elegant wine, with toasted notes and a good length on the palate. It is a fusion between time, the vine and tireless effort. For those who already know our region and its history, tasting this wine will take you to the heart of it.
The grapes for this wine come from one of our most special plots, “La Rendeja”. The wine is vinified in the traditional way with spontaneous but temperature-controlled fermentations. It is then aged for 28 months in American oak barrels, which contributes to its structure, length and richness of aromas. The result is a superb wine which, thanks to its great aging capacity, will continue to develop and improve in bottle.
